Welcome to LOCAST

LOCAST (Enabling LOw-CArbon STructures) is a collaborative project from the universities of Swansea, Cardiff, Bath and Exeter funded by UKRI. Through a collaboration of structural engineers, physiologists and psychologists, LOCAST is providing the basic human science needed to unlock low-carbon tall-building construction for the future.

Get involved in the research

Tall buildings, like skyscrapers, are built with lots of material so they don’t sway in the wind. We could save a lot of concrete and steel by allowing them to sway a little while still being safe. However, we don’t know how the people inside the buildings will respond to sway. That’s where you come in!

We are looking for lots of people over 16 years old to take part in an experiment at the University of Bath where we will simulate building sway and measure some biological signals and performance at some simple computer tasks. Test sessions will last around 5.5 hours.
